FAQ

Quick answers about how Chestnut works. Still stuck? Reach out.

  • What is Chestnut?

Chestnut is a calm envelope budgeting app for everyday spending. It helps you see what is safe to spend, organize money into envelopes, and log expenses in a few seconds — without spreadsheets or harsh alerts.

  • Is Chestnut a bank?

No. Chestnut is not a bank, lender, or investment service. Amounts come from what you enter and allocate yourself. Always double-check important financial decisions on your own.

  • Do you connect to my bank account?

Not today. Chestnut does not pull transactions from your bank. You add income and expenses yourself so the experience stays simple, private, and under your control.

  • What are the three envelope types?

Fixed covers bills and commitments (rent, subscriptions). Flexible is for everyday treats and choices (eating out, self care). Savings is for goals you are building toward (vacation, emergency fund).

  • What does “safe to spend” mean?

On Home, safe to spend is the flexible money you can enjoy this cycle after your fixed envelopes and savings plans are accounted for. Open the app and know you are okay within a few seconds.

  • How fast is logging an expense?

Designed for a 3–5 second flow: tap +, enter an amount, pick an envelope, save. No mandatory notes or accounting jargon.

  • What devices is Chestnut on?

Chestnut is available on iPhone and Android through the App Store and Google Play.

  • Can I sync my budget to the cloud?

Yes, if you want. You can keep data on your phone only, or turn on cloud saving in settings to back up and sync across your devices.

  • Are there subscriptions?

Yes. Chestnut offers a monthly plan and a yearly plan. The yearly plan includes a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers. Payments, renewals, and refunds are handled by Apple and Google through their app stores — see our terms of use.

  • What about notifications?

Notifications are optional. You can turn on gentle reminders — for example when an envelope is running low or a bill is coming up — without shame-y warnings.

  • How is my data handled?

See our privacy policy for what we collect, how cloud sync works, and how to reach us with data requests.
