privacy policy

last updated june 1, 2026

this policy describes how chestnut ("we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our iphone app and this website at getchestnut.app. by using chestnut, you agree to this policy.

summary

  • you enter your own budget data — we do not connect to your bank
  • you can keep data on your iphone only, or turn on optional cloud sync
  • subscriptions are billed by apple; we do not receive your card details
  • we use a small set of service providers to run sign-in, sync, subscriptions, and reliability
  • we do not sell your personal information

information you provide

depending on how you use chestnut, you may provide or generate:

  • account information — if you sign in (for example with apple, google, or email), we receive identifiers needed to authenticate you, such as your account id and, where available, your email address or display name from your sign-in provider
  • budget and app content — envelopes, allocations, transactions, bills, goals, merchants or labels you type, notes, payday schedule, currency and language preferences, and notification settings
  • support messages — if you email us at thjis@getchestnut.app

chestnut is a manual budgeting tool. we do not import transactions from banks or payment cards, and we do not ask for your bank login.

information collected automatically

when you use the app, we may automatically receive:

  • device and app diagnostics — crash reports, error logs, app version, device type, and operating system version to keep the app stable (via our error monitoring provider)
  • subscription status — whether you have an active plan or trial, through apple's in-app purchase system and our subscription management provider (we do not receive full payment card numbers)
  • technical identifiers — internal user ids and tokens needed for sign-in, sync, and subscription linking

we configure error reporting to avoid sending sensitive budget fields (such as amounts, merchant names, or email addresses) in crash data where possible.

where your data is stored

on your iphone (local mode): if you use chestnut without cloud saving, your budget data stays in on-device storage on your phone.

in the cloud (optional): if you turn on cloud saving in settings, your budget data and profile settings are stored on secure servers operated by our backend provider so you can back up and sync across your apple devices signed into the same account.

switching to cloud saving uploads your existing on-device budget data; this is intended to be one-way.

how we use information

  • provide, maintain, and improve chestnut
  • authenticate you and sync your data when you enable cloud saving
  • deliver optional local notifications you turn on (for example bill or envelope reminders)
  • process and validate subscriptions and free trials through apple
  • monitor reliability, fix bugs, and prevent abuse
  • respond to support requests and legal obligations

notifications

if you allow notifications, chestnut schedules reminders on your device (for example weekly check-ins, bill reminders, or when an envelope is running low). these are optional and controlled in app settings. we do not use notifications to sell advertising.

service providers

we rely on trusted companies that process data on our behalf, including:

  • supabase — authentication and cloud database hosting when you use sign-in or cloud sync
  • revenuecat — subscription status and entitlement management linked to apple in-app purchases
  • sentry — crash and error reporting
  • apple — sign in with apple, app store billing, and platform services
  • google — google sign-in, if you choose that sign-in method

these providers are permitted to use your information only to perform services for us, subject to their own privacy policies and our agreements with them.

what we do not do

  • we do not sell your personal information
  • we do not use your budget data for third-party advertising
  • we do not store apple payment card numbers — apple processes all payments

retention

we keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, comply with law, resolve disputes, and enforce our terms of use. you can delete your account and all associated data from settings → delete account in the app. you can also email thjis@getchestnut.app for help.

your choices and rights

depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your data.

  • update budget data, settings, and notification preferences in the app
  • sign out or stop using cloud sync
  • manage subscriptions in your apple id settings
  • email us for privacy requests at thjis@getchestnut.app

we will respond within a reasonable time and as required by applicable law.

children

chestnut is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. contact us if you believe a child has provided data to us.

international users

if you use chestnut from outside your home country, your information may be processed in countries where our service providers operate. we take steps designed to protect your information consistent with this policy.

changes

we may update this policy as the product evolves. we will post the new date at the top of this page. continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
